12th December 2021 was 5th Anniversary of the Paris Climate Agreement. PM Modi in his short speech reminded the world that India is not only on track to reach the targets of Paris Agreement but also exceeded. It is now clear, based on emission gap report of UNEP that nationally determined contributions as submitted as per Paris Climate Agreement are not sufficient to meet the goal of keeping global warming below 2 deg C as compared to pre-industrial era. There is need to raise the ambitious targets without which global warming would reach 3.5 deg C by end of 2100.
While describing the India’s ‘raised ambition’ and the role it is playing in international scenario, PM Modi appears fully confident, but road to 2 deg C would require institutional approaches because the task is challenging . Task is directly connected to SDG 7 ( Access to clean energy ) and SDG 13 ( Climate Action). END
